I‘m sure there are a lot of golfers out there who would like to lose weight (do you think BIG JD cares?). Are you one of them? Unfortunately there are more over weight golfers on the golf course than thin ones. If losing weight isn’t of interest to you that’s okay, but for those of you who want to, here’s a 9 quick and easy ways to kickstart your fat-burning machine and drop thos pounds fast!
1. Park your car farther away next time you go to the course. This may sound like a “no-brainer”, but do you do it currently? If not, start doing it. Believe it or not, you’ll burn enough calories every time you do this to add up to pounds lost in a very short period of time!
2. Skip the 19th hole and bring your own food for the course. This is huge! You can trust your own food, but you don’t know how the food is made at the course. You may think you’re eating healthy, but come to find out they use ingredients that are high fat high sugar, which kills your weight loss
.
3. Make it public. This is a bold move! Make it public to friends and family you are going to lose weight. Say it with conviction, not sarcasm. Show them you WILL make it happen, and hope they hold you accountable. This can be a strong mechanism to your consistency.
4. Walk don’t cart. This is another “no-brainer”, but again I have to ask if you do it? If you do ride a cart, don’t pull up right next to your ball on every shot. Park it deliberately 15-20 feet away on every shot. This adds up and will allow you to prepare for your shot better.
5. Avoid high sugar foods before you leave the house. This can be anything from cinnamon rolls, sugar cereal, pancakes or waffles with syrup, and even fruit. This spikes your blood sugar levels and will leave you hungry shortly after you arrive at the course.
You wan’t instead a whole grain like oatmeal, wheat bran cereal, bagel, or whole wheat toast. This will stabilize your blood sugar level and give you more long-term fuel for the early part of the round.
6. 10 minutes after every meal. Talk a casual 10 minute walk after EVERY meal. I’m dead serious. If you can’t walk right after you ate, you ate too much! That’s a telltale sign to institute some portion control in your eating. Walking revs up your calorie-burning immediately. If you experience stomach aches, or discomfort wait 5-10 minutes before you go on your walk.
7. Get off that couch! When you retire in the evening, do you plop down in your favorite chair like Archie Bunker and call it a night? Especially after you ate? Not anymore! Get up every 15 minutes and “move your body”. Don’t get stuck in that lazyboy! Use a timer if you have to. Set it for 15 minutes…when it goes off, get up and move about for 5 minutes. Here’s an idea…do a golf stretch or two while you’re at it!
8. “Old school” every morning! I want you to remember those good ‘ol PE days. That’s physical education. Remember push-ups and sit ups. I want you to do 10 push-ups and 10 sit-ups EVERY MORNING! This may be easy for you, but do it anyways. This kickstarts you metabolism first thing…right when you wake up.
9. Eat those veges! I know this last one is a boring one, but it’s one I do all day every day. When I get hungry, and it’s not meal time, I go to the fridge and grab a few carrots, celery or a couple slices of cucumber. They have virtually no calories and will curb your appetitive until your next meal time. Works for me like a charm!
I think it’s so important to get a handle on your weight that I put together a Golfers Guide To Weight Loss ebook if you feel you need some guidance and help. This is NOT a diet book, but rather simple tips and techniques to lose weight fast and permanently!

Really good tips. They seem so obvious but most of them we need to be reminded of … or we overlook them. Just about everyone wants to lose weight. One thing you didn’t mention specifically is alcohol. I sometimes have a beer or two on the course and a couple of glasses of wine in the evening. That’s lots of calories. I’m trying to cut back to one and one now.

Thanks for the comment Patricia! I left alchohol out of this on purpose
! I know most golfers drink socially on the course and after the round, so I didn’t want to beat them over the head with it. I try not to push my luck with golfers. If I can get them onto fitness that’s a huge hurdle. Then I might be able to tackle habits like drinking

This is a great comment. I’m trying to cut calories like crazy, but I seem to always fall in the chips and salsa craze. After all I do live near Austin, TX. -Any suggestions on how to just eat the salsa?

Excellent tips. I think number 4 is the biggest. Players don’t realize how many calories can be burned when walking, especially for people like me that need to drop weight. Not to mention, there’s always the strength and endurance that you build in the legs as well.

And walking isn’t demanding. Anyone can walk. Just doing it consistently is the key to losing weight.

All good tips. Tip #1 can be extended to include any place you go. Don’t fight for that parking spot closest to the store/theater/restaurant/shoppingcenter. Park further out in the lot and burn a few more calories
.
Good post.

Yep…I didn’t put everywhere on purpose as well. I was trying to make it easier on the golfer by saying the golf parking lot
! But you are most definitely right. Do it in every situation instead of spending most of your time looking for the closest spot.

I bought Mike’s ebook ‘Golfers Guide to Weight Loss’ some time ago; and I’m finally reading it. I got to tell you; it’s better than any “diet” book. MIke describes the essentials, which I’m very excited about going after. I’m currently a +1 golfer, but I want to lose the weight so I can maintain the mental and physical edge over people that I play with. Mike, thank you for writing this ebook — sorry to finally begin reading it — I should have started sooner.

I have noticed EBooks on line and wondered if they are the same content as the ones on your site, Ultimate fitness manual, total stretching. Also is the seven minute stretching routines included in your ultimate fitness book………Thanks Joseph
