Pivot Your Way To A Better Golf Swing

How much frustration do we need to finally either quit the game or accept our mediocre scores and go about life? I know I’ve been there for the better part of 10 years. Luckily I’m the golfer struggling to get to low single digits, but it’s all relative isn’t it

What I want to do is come up with a swing method that is simple to do and more important, FEEL. You’ve got to be able to visualize it and get the right FEEL to successfully do it on the course when it matters.

What I’ve come across recently is the concept of a pivot golf swing. Line up a dozen instructors and they’ll all give you a different definition of pivot, but here on MY BLOG  I want to describe what I am feeling when I say pivot.

First off, I believe in the hogan method for the downswing.

As you can see, Ben Hogan uses a big hip pivot for his downswing move. This lower body rotation, lowers the arms into the hitting zone, and creates a tremendous amount of lag, going into impact.

Because I have struggled for years to initiate my downswing with my legs (hips), I now have adopted what I call a “body” pivot in my downswing. What I really focus on is holding my angles. The two most important angles for me personally is my upper body angle in my hip joint, and my right wrist angle.

On the downswing, I rotate my body pivot, but maintaining these two critical angles, and what do you know? My hips rotate, and I compress the golf ball like I’ve never done before

I hope that makes sense to you, if not, comment below and I’ll do my best to explain it more. Also, I’d like to mention, I’ve learned a great deal about lag and how to create it over at a fantastic site, Golf Lag Tips.

I, myself, use a Hogan type of pivot and let me tell you. I have gone from a score of 100’s to the mid seventies over time. This swing has change my game completely; I hit more fairways and GIR’s than I ever have. Additionally, I have gained much more clubhead speed, and as a result, I have had to relearn my distances for my clubs. I used to, for example, hit a 4 iron no more than 170 yards. Now, I hit a 4 iron 195 to 200. I used to take a 3w or a 3h to reach a par four in two, but now I can reach it with a 4 iron.

Hey Timothy!

That’s quite an improvement. Any golfer willing to read Hogan’s Five Lessons book will definitely see improvement in their game.

Cheers,
Mike

You said…

“Because I have struggled for years to initiate my downswing with my legs (hips), I now have adopted what I call a “body” pivot in my downswing.”

Do you not feel that this is simply due to you having your weight too far back on your right side (ie: getting stuck on your right foot)?

Interesting blog – I’ve checked out some of the links too!
