Do you struggle with your exercise and nutrition? I know this may sound like a dumb question, but I want to get you in the right frame of mind to benefit from this blog post on motivation. You see…success isn’t that hard! Yes it takes a consistent effort, but anything worth while in life isn’t easy. Do you agree? For the majority of people (and golfers) exercise is the toughest commitment to keep. I see people struggle with this ALL THE TIME.
I’m here to tell you it’s a lot easier than you think BUT…you must be “in the moment” as frequently as possible. Why do I say this? It’s called “self-talk”. We do it every minute of every day 24/7. What I want you to do is be totally aware of this self talk and beat it at its own game! I want to give you a few mental tips to overcome this self-sabotaging issue.
In that moment when you are supposed to exercise and your mind has other thoughts…DO IT ANYWAYS! Realize in that moment, the sabotage is trying to win and you’re stronger than that. You’re going to win this time
! When you prove to yourself you can do this, it gets easier and easier. In a short matter of time, you are a CONSISTENT exerciser and reaping all the benefits, which are feeling better, looking better, having a TON more ENERGY…and playing great golf!
Fit people NEVER, and I mean NEVER allow self-talk to win!
Fit people “do it anyways”, no matter what!
Out-of-shape people come up with all the excuses why they can’t do it (which by the way is a voluntary choice) and never become fit or lose weight. Haven’t you experienced this before? The self-talk sabotaged your intention and failure was the result. But you say…”I’ll do it tomorrow”, but the problem with this attitude is tomorrow NEVER comes! That’s why people aren’t successful. You must take action NOW! That is the ONLY way to be successful. No action equals no results. Plain and simple.
When you make a commitment to exercise or nutrition, nothing and I mean NOTHING is more important in that moment. You MUST make it priority number one to stick to your goals. When the time comes that you are supposed to do your exercise program, you DO IT. You don’t blow it off. You don’t find reasons (excuses) not to do it. You do it no matter what. This is the mindset of a successful person.

nice blog. From my pint of view motiviation is the core of success, no matter how hard you can try if you don´t have the right motivitacion success will be far away, The person who you really are is the one who is in the present performing the actions not the one who is in the future so i´ll say stick to present, stick to your plan i you will beat inner talk and ego. Golf is like like, plan every shot plan every move and you will achieve success,,,,, life and golf are very simple that you will never believe it,,,,,
bey bye

How often does this kind of thing happen on the golf course? At my course there is a par 5 which is easily reachable in two, only there’s a pond guarding the front left side of the green. So often I’ve hit a good drive and am about play my second when that “self talk” comes into to play saying… “don’t hit it left or you’re screwed”… “I better not hook this!”, and then 9 times out of ten it goes into the drink. I always have to battle turning these negative thoughts into positives. It’s like that constant battle you so often see on T.V. programmes where the little red devil
pops up telling someone to do something bad, then the little angel appears telling you to do the opposite…
You’ve got to listen to that little angel if you want to succeed!

Jared,
The brain doesn’t differentiate between “don’t” or not. It is hearing “hit it left” and you are doing exactly what you tell it
The mind is an amazing thing! Tell it positive things and your world becomes pretty awesome. I’m still working on that part
Thanks for stopping by!

Amen to that, I can’t tell you how convincing my evil self talk is. I’ll be all pumped for a work out and then about 15 reasons of why I shouldn’t work out tonight appear. Now I force myself into situations where backing out is not an option. Seems to work for me

That’s the way to “win the game!” Everybody needs to find “their way” to beat their self talk and achieve their goals. When you master this self talk, I’m telling you the sky is the LIMIT! Anything’s possible! It’s a powerful concept, but deceivingly easy. Keep on keep’in on!!!

I definitely agree with everything that was said in this discussion….But I have a problem with this concept for myself because I have trouble waking up early to go do cardio and workout at like 5 am(which is what I need to be doing because I’m trying to become a world class player), and this is all because it seems like I’m a different person that early, I have basically no motivation in the morning and things seem almost impossible for me and sometimes I even question my golf career and whether I even want to play golf that day or even do anything…… yet later on in the day when I’m wide awake, my passion for golf is just burning and all I can think about is becoming the best player I can possibly be, and all I can do is just say to myself, WOW if I could only somehow make myself do what I should be doing at that earlier time, I’d be so much better at golf. so for me it’s weird because I know I have that motivation and desire to be great, but I only have it at a certain time of the day, (afternoon and evening) if anyone could offer me any suggestions on how to overcome this I would really appreciate it because I really think it would change my life and my chances of getting on tour if I could simply just fix this problem. I’ve been thinking maybe there is some kind of supplement I need to take when I go to sleep or wake up in order to get my day off to a solid start like I need to be, because I know I get enough sleep and eat healthy, but I’m just really unsure of the situation….any helpful advice is greatly appreciated.

Tyron,
I can tell you right now it’s all between your ears my friend
I do a 1 hour cardio at 4:00am EVERY morning and I don’t even have to cause I work for myself, and I can tell you EVERY morning I don’t EVER want to do it but I DO IT ANYWAYS just like the above post says. If you want to be world class at anything you need to make sacrifices. If that sacrifice is getting up just one hour earlier, you gotta do it dude!
Staying commited is a mindset. Stay laser-focused on your END GOAL and you won’t let the short-term temptations get to you. Set the alarm and GET UP! That’s all I can say really. If you are serious enough about your goals, you’ll find a way. All successful people always find a way.

In the past I have focused on good nutrition to stay healthy, but now I feel like my body is just plain falling apart. I will need to spend much more time maintaining flexibility and overall strength in order to keep my game sound.
