Without rules, society falls apart. Nobody likes rules until the rules work in our favor. I think most of our attitudes toward rules are colored by the rules of institutions that we perceive as always working against us. The insurance industry and the banking industry are two that come to mind. Nobody wants to deal with either because we "just know" that our claim will be denied because of their "stupid rules". Yet, as stated in the post, knowing the rules can help us in dealing with these situations and in most cases, bring about a favorable outcome.
