I recall Jack Nicklaus saying that he always felt great after starting a round with a double bogie because he knew the worst was over. It was birdies and pars from there on in. He had got the bad hole out of the way already...great mindset. I recall a friend starting a round birdie albitross! That's right, he holed his 2nd shot on the par 5 and was 4 under through 2 holes!

Could you imagine a better start!? You'd think he was off to the races, right...

Well, he proceeded to shoot OVER his handicap. The start makes no difference if your mindset isn't solid. The situation, whether playing flawless or not so good, shouldn't alter your mindset. This is the sign of a player who is destined to improve and play to the best of their capabilities.

Excellent points made on the mental toughness. I often find myself discouraged after a terrible start, but when I review the round afterwards I find myself saying "If it were not for those couple holes....." Needless to say, some of my best scores have come after starting with a double.
