Here’s The Missing Golf Stretch For A Bad Back

Posted by Mike in Golf Stretching

Have you ever walked off the course with your back killing you? If you say no, you are only a handful of golfers that can say that. Most golfers hit the course with tight lower back muscles that cannot withstand the stress of the golf swing. The solution is a golf stretch for a bad back!

How many stretches do you do currently that are targeted to the muscles in your lower back. Do you do any at all? Most golfers don’t…but then wonder why they cannot escape the excrutiating pain they get after every round of golf  .

They Key Golf Stretching Movement

What is the main movement in your golf swing? It’s a twist right? If that’s the main movement, why wouldn’t you incorporate rotational stretches in your golf flexibility routine? You would! This is the quickest, most effective way to prevent back pain from reoccuring ever again!

When I refer to twisting, I like to think of your body as two separate parts. Your upper body and your lower body. Just like your golf swing. You rotate your upper body approximately twice the distance of your lower body. Doing stretches with this in mind is the key!

Here’s Your Golf Stretch For A Bad Back

Golf Stretch For Bad Back Take a look at this simple golf stretch I’m doing. Notice how my legs are straight and my lower body is fixed, while I’m rotating to the one side with my upper body, creating similar torque you see in your golf swing? This is a simple, yet VERY effective stretch anyone can do at anytime during the day or night to quickly improve your lower back flexibility and eliminate pain.

You would rotate to one side and hold it for 15 seconds. Your goal will be to get both palms flat on the ground to each side. You may find one side is tighter than the other. Rotate to the other side and hold again for 15 seconds. Then repeat one or two more times each side. You can do this stretch more than once a day if you remember to  .

Consistency With Your Stretches

Like anything…doing your golf stretches consistently is how you will see massive improvement. You may think these stretches and exercises look basic, but I can assure you 90% of ALL amateur golfers are NOT doing them. So why not get the edge and do them yourself?

All it takes is a few stretches a few minutes each day to see amazing results! Isn’t that worth a better game and a healthy back?

Hi Mike,

Unfortunately, most people don’t realize the advantages of doing stretching exercises everyday, regardless of whether they participate in sports of any kind or if they just get around in daily life. I suspect stretching is not perceived as “sexy” enough and people can’t “see” the results like you can with many other exercises (increased muscle size, etc.). Therefore, it tends to get pushed to the side. Good post.

Larry,
You are absolutely correct! I, being one of the “non-stretchers” in this world. Well last week I ordered Mike’s stretching book and have been doing them at work several times each day in hopes for more flexibility. I’ve always realized that stretching is very important but for some reason, never incorporated it in my daily routine until now. I do play golf and want to get better, so I realized now that stretching will play a big part in this.

Thanks for the book, Mike!

Hi Mike
I have doing stretches daily since I picked up my first e-book from you. The stretching has helped my golf game a lot. I will add this stretch for the back to my daily routine. Thanks for a great post

“Have you ever walked off the course with your back killing you? ”

LOL,

The question, in my case, is when was the last time, that I DIDN’T ….

Physical fitness, in general is something I’ve been woefully lacking in, especially the last uh … decade or so when I’ve been working a 9-5 office job.

Sitting all day in a chair, then rushing off to the course afer work and wondering why my body doesn’t perform like it at least semi-used-to, in the good “old days” …. err much younger days !

During the winter here in Canada (Toronto) is even worse for me exercise ..or lack thereof.

I have used the exercise you describe above, and also a variation, which I’d love to get your input on :

While standing up, and leaning forward against something for support with my hands, i.e. a table top, I’llI basically “hang” one leg limp while standing on
the other leg, then pivot around that leg, “shaking it off” and generally “loosening” up my lower back and hip area.

It helps greatly to “free up” my back, which from a combination of years of swinging into a “reverse C” finish, in my younger days, along with trying to lift a 200 lb water bottle one, summer, has done things to my back, that I think I don’t want to know about ;)

I went to a Chiropractor briefly, years ago, and my X-ray showed a very curved and twisted lower spine …. well at least I didn’t have any other x-rays to compare it to, .. so I really don’t know how “abnormal” my back is.

I stopped going to the Chiro, as I was being charged ~$50.00 for a 2 minute “procedure”, that didn’t seem to be doing anything that I could see, but I was promised would “eventually” accumulate to improving my back.

I was just looking over your “golf stretching” Ebook, and I may have to take you up on that ;)

Mike
