How To Squeeze Every Penny Out Of Your Golf Lessons

Posted by Mike in Golf Instruction

If you’re planning on taking golf lessons, then here are some things to think about and consider so you can get the most out of the classes:

1. Bring your listening skills: The advice to “listen up” seems like common sense. But no matter what lessons or classes you’re involved in, it is one of the most important elements of participating in any student-teacher situation.

And it is especially the case with golf lessons. Keep in mind that with golf lessons, most of the time you’re gong to be standing over the ball, holding your golf club, while the instructor is giving you instructions and advice throughout the entire swing movement. You can’t get better feedback than that. But if your mind is not concentrating on the moves, while at the same time listening and absorbing every word the instructor is telling you, you are going to miss out on some valuable pieces of information.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions: While listening is so important in order to absorb everything your instruction is telling you, asking questions is probably equally important.

You may find that, even though you’ve studied the subject of golf and all of its many components, your golf instructor may have a completely different way of describing different aspects of the swing. The information you get from your instructor will probably be new to you, so don’t worry about asking a “silly” question.

Never forget the old saying that, “The only stupid question is the one you didn’t ask.”

If you are ever confused or unsure about anything that your instructor is teaching you, ASK THE QUESTION! Don’t worry about whether the question seems trivial. Don’t be concerned if the information has already been discussed. Your instructor will not think less of you, just because you asked the question. You’ll probably find that he or she will appreciate the fact that you were paying attention and are showing a real interest in what you are being taught.

3. Practice in between your lessons: If you go to the trouble of signing up for golf lessons and attending the classes, then be sure that you practice whatever your instructor has asked you to work on between lessons. Most instructors will give you some homework, some things they want you to work on before the next lesson. It would be rare that you were not asked to review some maneuvers and aspects of your swing in between your sessions.

It is so important that you practice between your classes in order to get the most improvement from your lessons. You will find that your next lesson will be so much more productive if you spend some time practicing what you’ve learned. And your instructor will see that you are making the effort to improve your game.

Keep in mind that most golf instructors are in the business because they like to help people and see them succeed. If you’re not willing to take advantage of the classes (that you’ve paid for) then it’s probably better not to waste your time, your instructor’s time and your money.

4. It’s okay to slow down the pace: Probably just as important as asking questions and listening, is to let the instructor know that things are progressing too fast for you. If you start experiencing “information overload” because the instructor is presenting too many things too quickly for you to process, then say something to the instructor. It’s better to focus on just one thing at a time instead of being overwhelmed. Going home from a lesson feeling confused about what you were supposed to learn is not a good feeling. And if the instructor isn’t flexible enough to meet your needs, then it’s probably time to find a new instructor.

If you consider all of the above things, you should get good value for your money and you will find that you come away from the lessons feeling satisfied that you have gained the most from your instruction that you possibly can. And, best of all, you should notice an improvement in your game.

Graham,

My belief in golf is working on your body (strength and flexibility) to improve swing mechanics, power, distance and consistency. You’ll get a feel for my approach by clicking around and reading some of my info.
