Swing An Golf Exercise Club For More Yards

Posted by Mike in Golf Exercises

If you’re looking for a “quick” way to add yards to all your clubs? Stupid question…I know. EVERY golfer wants to hit it longer. I am a huge advocate for both golf exercises and stretches for long-term golf success, one of the fastest ways to increase your driving distance is to swing a golf exercise weighted club.

You can’t get any more golf-specific than that! You are doing the EXACT same motion (the golf swing) but with added resistance. You are effectively improving the strength AND flexibility in your golf swing muscles with this club. As a golfer, you love to swing a club and hit balls right? Well…swinging this golf exercise club is the equivalent of hitting dozens and dozens of balls in a matter of a few minutes!

Swinging golf exercise clubIn the picture to the right, I’m swinging it just like I said. You are making a normal swing, just not at full swing (EVER).

I swing mine EVERY DAY!

You heard that right. Along with my daily golf exercise routines, and stretching and cardio, I pull out my weighted golf club and swing it 20-30 times in succession in front of a mirror to make sure my technique is solid. I start out with half swings at half speed, and slowly build up to full swing at no more than 75% of my full speed.

You NEVER want to swing it at full speed! If you do…you are risking injury. Just picture the professional baseball player swinging the “heavy” bat when he’s on deck. Do you ever see them swing at full speed? NEVER! They know that it is not necessary to get the benefit of swinging it.

When I do my golf swings, I do them back and forth without stopping. So in 60 seconds I can get over 50 swings in. How many balls can you hit on the range in 60 seconds? I will take a 2 minute rest and repeat this twice more. When I’m done…I feel all my golf muscles big time!

If you don’t have a weighted club, you can get one on my site. You don’t have to get it there… as you can go online, or go to your local golf shop. Either way…I strongly encourage you get one and start swinging it right away!

Make sure you make quite a few left handed swings as well with the heavy club. Swinging the same way year after year, will eventually weeken one side.

Steve,

Actually I do, but forgot to mention it

Also, I don’t want to give all those golfers so much to do…LOL.

Thanks for the reminder though.

Mike

I would think that the pendulum motion for 60 seconds would take care of both sides. This got me thinking, if you don’t have the weighted club and you just swing the club at the range and while playing, does it weaken your off hand side?

That’s how I swing mine  I don’t stop at all. It’s “back-and-forth” for at least 20-30 in a row. I never go to a full backswing or a full finish.

Thanks for stopping by Kenny! Checked out the airprogolf site. Man that’s a funky looking training aid. Don’t know if I’d take it to the range or just swing it in my backyard

I have had the weighted club for 2 years now. I don’t swing it as much as I should but
I would say I’ve added about 20 yards to my drives in the past 2 years. It also keeps me
loose as a goose.

About that airprogolf gadget. Why don’t you just tape a parachute
to the back of your driver and save yourself $39.95

I hear ya  Sometimes gadgets like this don’t make a lot of sense, but then again I haven’t tried it so I can’t say if it’s effective or not.

Mike,
An exercise I think is very specific for training the golf muscles is this:

Take an elastic band. Put one end under your left foot. Hold the other end in your hands as if you were gripping a club. The band must be the right thickness to allow this exercise.
Now move your hands as if you were taking a back swing, trying to keep your right elbow
pointed to the ground ( imaginary ball) as long as possible.
This movement encourages strengthening and stretching of the right shoulder and arm to get it in the correct position at the top of the backswing. This position requires the backward placement of the right shoulder and the external rotation and elevation of the upper arm (the humerus). This exercise also strengthens the core abdominal muscles.
The exercise band must be elastic enough to allow you to reach the top of your backswing position/.
If you look at good players , you will see that the right shoulder goes farther BEHIND
the neck and the humerus is externally rotated. This loads the right side.
Baseball pitchers use their arms the same way.
Bad players tend not to externally rotate the humerus and tend to complete the backswing
before the right shoulder is deep enough behind the neck.
I hope this is clear. I would like your reaction.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE DIFFERENT GRIPS? I GUESS IF YOU WOULD SWING BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT HANDED, YOU WOULD WANT THE REGULAR GRIP. DOES THE FORMED GRIP GET YOUR LEFT HAND IN A PROPER POSITION VIS-A-VIS HOLDING IT IN YOUR FINGERS RATHER THAN IN THE PALM?

Wouldn’t swinging a heavy weight slowly with a limited range of motion (as you said Mike 75% of full swing) teach your muscles how to fire with less speed? I know that most professional sports who need speed and power train for speed and power. This seems to be training one to be slow and strong? I’m not trying to argue, just curious to get a better understanding.

Hey Mike!

I really appreciate your comments and questions, so don’t be shy in EVER asking in here

You make a great point, but what I personally like to do is swing the heavy club at 75%-80% of full speed, then immediately grab my driver and swing it at full speed with good technique.

I find the combination of swing the weighted club FIRST, then the driver is very effective.

Thanks again,
Mike
