When it’s time to put the clubs away for the winter, it’s time to re-evaluate your season and see where you can make improvements duing the off season. This is your opportunity to start your next golf season right out of the gate, with lower scores and longer drives. You won’t have to “work your way” into the season, you’ll be like a primed athlete ready to bust loose!

Golf Swing Training

Did you have some flaws in your golf swing that resulted in consistent mishits? If so, diagnose the root cause and apply golf swing training drills to correct it. You can do many of these drills right in your home, garage or even your office with a golf club and a mirror

Repetitive drill training for your golf swing will encourage your muscles to produce the correct technique, so when you get out on the range, you can actually feel the right way to swing a golf club.

Off Season Strength Training Program

Like in any other sport, athletes will spend their off season strengthening the specific muscles used in the mechanics of their sport…why wouldn’t you, if you want to improve your golf swing? I’m not talking about grueling gym workouts that break your body and take 2 hours to complete. I’m talking about simple golf strength exercises specfic to your swing you can do in your home in just a few minutes each day…and their fun to do

Off Season Golf Stretching Program

This is a BIGGY! As golfers get older, they lose a tremendous amount of golf specific flexibility, which results in a massive reduction in driving distance and even golf swing consistency. The ONLY way to stop this decline and regain the distance you’ve lost is a golf swing specfic stretching program. You will be absolutely amazed at the freedom you’ll get in your golf swing if you just do a few simple stretches each day. By this time next spring, you’ll be crushing the ball long and straight.

Your Off Season Golf Swing Training Program Is A Must

I hope you’ve read this little blog post, and realize the importance of off season golf training if you want to improve your golf swing power and consistency.

Here’s a shameless plug

My Power Golf Training Ebook is filled with simple golf swing exercises, stretches and program that are perfect for an off season program. Click on the big image below to read more about it.

Along with my power golf training products, the training aids I review and endorse have been tried by me personally, AND I use them in my own power training routines.

I have found a fantastic power golf swing weight trainer that is the most portable, user-friendly training aid for power I’ve ever seen.

Take a look at the picture below. I’m swinging my driver with this cool little weighted trainer near the end. See it? It’s blue.

You want more power in your golf swing? Want an easy exercise(s) to quickly see improvement in distance? It’s all in the wrists! Yes…they say over 70%+ of your speed comes from the hinging and unhinging of your wrists.

The only problem with that is many golfers, especially older ones have both weak and inflexible wrist joints, and they cannot get or maintain their wrist cock (lag) during the downswing. This is a HUGE power loss for golfers with these limitations.

I’ll bet when you hear power and distance, you wouldn’t think wrists would you? Just picture hitting a golf ball, baseball, or throwing anything without a wrist cock with lag before release. It would be a powerless movement with no speed.

There’s a simple exercise I do for wrist strength, and I use my weighted golf club to speed up the strength improvement, but if you don’t have one, you can use an 8 iron or even your 3 iron. The longer the club the more the resistance on your wrist and forearm.

The exercise is so easy and simple you can do it anywhere. In your living room. At your office. Even when you travel (with your clubs that is).

I call it Golf Wrist Cocks. (There are several other very effective wrist exercises that I may divulge later ):

Grab a single club as stated above. Start with say a pitching wedge and work your way up to a 3 iron.

Your arm hangs at your side. Grab club and let head rest on the ground at your side.

Cock your wrist upward to raise the clubhead off the ground as high as it can go while leaving arm at side.

Slowly lower to ground uncocking your wrist.

Repeat this 15 times and switch hands.

You will feel a burn in your forearms.

Do this 2-3 times a week and you’ll be plowing through the ball at impact!

Golfers want to know!

What are the secrets to long golf drives? The ones the BIG boys in those long drive competitions put to use to hit balls over 400 yards. I know you may never aspire to hit it that long, but how about another 30 yards farther than you are now? I’m sure you’d oblige wouldn’t you?

You may be thinking those guys are monsters. 6′8″ 280 of shredded muscle, but you might be surprised to find out this past years Remax Long Drive Champion is ONLY 165 pounds and just under 6′ tall. AND…he is ONLY 20 years of age! Truly amazing!

So what’s the secret to hitting LONG drives in golf?

Well…I can tell you first off, if you are tight or weak good luck

But there’s still hope if you are. You can maximize your driving distance with a few simple tips (secrets):

Tee the ball forward in your stance. I mean almost outside your comfort zone. Draw a line straight out from your lead foot big toe and that’s where your ball should be. This enable you to do two very important things to hit it LONG.

First it allows you to get behind the ball and STAY behind it at impact, imparting “all you’ve got” into that poor golf ball Secondly, this promotes an ascending blow on the golf ball. That means you are catching it up on the UPSWING which promotes a higher launch angle and more distance.

Tilt your spine away from the ball. Most amateurs stand with a vertical spine with no tilt. This makes it nearly impossible to hit an ascending blow, and you have a greater chance of a reverse pivot on your backswing. Tilting your spine away from the target, puts you in the ideal position to arrive at impact powerfully.

Grip pressure should be on the light side. Here again is where we get in trouble. We put a death grip on the club which SLOWS down clubhead speed. Why? Because muscular tension kills speed. Try to do anything fast when you tighten your muscles. It ain’t gonna happen! Next time you want to hit it LONG, just before you start your backswing, lighten your grip and see what happens.

Create and maintain lag. This is a BIG ONE! In order to have maximum clubhead speed at impact and beyond, you MUST hold your wrist cock as long as you can, coming down. This is one of the biggest power leaks in all of golf. Releasing that angle in the wrist creates a tremendous loss of clubhead speed and ultimately distance. Strengthen your wrists to be able to hold this angle WAY into the downswing.

So there you have it!

Simple secrets to hit long golf drives. Give them a try

Hitting more balls won’t fix this problem, nor will taking more lessons.

The biggest advocate for fitness in the senior golfer demographic is Gary Player. He has been doing strength training for golf for over 50 years now.

He’s in his 70’s but doesn’t look a day over 50. He truly is the epitome of health and fitness that all senior golfers should aspire to if they want to enjoy their golf for years to come.

If you’re going to start a golf strength training program there are several considerations you should be aware of first.

1. Get a physical from you doctor. I mean the whole enchilada. Blood work, EKG, basically a full check-up. This will expose any health risks you may have before you start. Knowing your baseline health is critical BEFORE you start a fitness program.

2. Do your research. Seek out information (like what’s in this blog ) to better educate yourself on the right program for YOUR needs. Knowing your options will give you a more precise program that will produce results.

3. Be realistic with your goals. Don’t go from no exercise to a goal of daily exercise. It won’t happen! Being realistic with your goals will help you succeed. So many people have overly ambitious goals, then fail shortly after starting.

If you haven’t been exercising, have a goal of 10 minutes of exercise a couple of times a week. When you’ve accomplished that goal, then and only then should you increase your expectations.

4. Listen to your body. This is BIG! When you’re exercising, you must pay attention to what your body is feeling the entire time. That means any twinges, tweaks or funny feelings in your joints or muscles. Most of the time a technique correction will eliminate those issues.

Having the mindset of “working through these” tweaks and pains is the wrong way to do it. If your body is telling you something… listen to it! It means you either need to stop or modify your technique.

5. Think positive… it’s NEVER too late to start. This is another big hurdle for many senior golfers. They think it’s too late. Wrong! It’s NEVER too late. The human body is an amazing machine. No matter what age it responds to stimulus (for example strength training).

In fact, senior golfers can see amazing improvement given their starting points are typically lower than someone who is younger. It’s fun to receive emails from golfers who have achieved amazing improvement. Adding 30 yards or more to their drives. Lowering their score by up to 10 strokes. And being able to play 36 holes without fatigue.

These are just a few tips to get you going. Do you have any tips you’d like to add? I invite you to comment below and let us know what you’ve experienced.

Do you struggle to get to the top of your backswing? Do you feel like you set the club at the top inconsistently every time! If so, this is because you have a “physical limitation” in your right arm (if you’re a right handed golfer) that’s not enabling you to attain the ideal position at the top.

Hit more balls, take more lessons…it doesn’t matter! You WILL NOT improve this swing flaw UNLESS you address the physical cause, as I am doing in the above video. This is just one example of how “fixing your body” will quickly improve your golf swing.

If you’re looking for personal guidance, take a look at my golf exercise dvds over at my Perform Better Golf Site.

Do you want to know? If you’ve been like the majority of golfing fans, you’ve seen Tigers body metamorphicize. He has put on something like 30 pounds of muscle since came on tour 10 years ago.

I know some of you might blow it off to his youth, but his dedication to his fitness should be admired and emulated by any golfer who wants to improve their golf swing and game. It’s no secret most of the tour players are working out to be competitive, but Tiger has taken that to another level.

I know very confidently he is not doing anything you couldn’t do as training for golf is not a mystery, but in the same breadth I will say there are many illegitimate so-called golf workout programs, so you do need to do some research.

A friend of mine has put together a fantastic resource for Tiger Woods Workout.
