Scott Stallings Workout

Last week PGA Tour Player Scott Stallings, won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, for a cool $1.1M.

This week he came over to our Phoenix Open and unfortunately didn’t make the cut, but I see on his twitter, that he and his wife were under the weather, plus it is very difficult to come back the next week and play well, after the emotional drain of the win from the week before.

What I was impressed with was I saw him at my gym (Lifetime Fitness Scottsdale) working out with his trainer. He was working very hard doing some very effective circuit training exercises. I was a little surprised, because after he won last week, I was thinking he didn’t look in shape (that was on TV), but boy was I wrong. Lesson learned. Do not judge a book by it’s cover.

What I will say for you golfers over 50… what he was doing would be too much for you, unless you have a higher level of fitness.

Shameless Plug

For those of you who want a golf-specific program, I’ve put together a 30 day program (one golf exercise/stretch) per day, that I know will add yards to your drives, and eliminate those nagging aches and pains.

Check it out here!

jordan-spieth-pga-golferTiger Woods was elected as the Player of the Year of the PGA Tour for 11th time, despite not winning a major in the season for the third time in his career; however the great story season in golf was about rookie Jordan Spieth.

The young golfer started the season ranked 810th in the world, but he was so good in the season, this weekend he will be playing with Woods and Phil Mickelson as a member of the Presidents Cup Team. He finished seventh in the final FedEx Cup standings and earned nearly $4 million.

If you bet on sports, you know Spieth was 30-1 at the John Deere Classic, where he won his first title, after defeating David Hearn and Zach Johnson on the fifth hole of a playoff; becoming the youngest winner on the PGA Tour in 82 years. He was the first teenager to won a title since Ralph Guldahl took the Santa Monica Open in 1931.

He was chosen to the team because “everybody wants to play with him”, said Fred Couples. After watching his Deutsche Bank Championship performance, Mickelson told Couples to pick him for the team.

Spieth, 20 years old, won the Rookie of the Year Award, after finishing nine times in the Top 10, in 23 tournaments. He became the first golfer since Tiger to go from no status at the start of the season to playing in the Tour Championship.

For those who have followed the Texan, this award was no surprise because he succeeded at each level before joining the PGA. Spieth comes from an athletic family; his mother played college basketball; his father played college baseball and his younger brother, Steven, plays basketball.

It’s too soon, and there are too many coincidences with Tiger Woods, but Spieth could learn some tricks this weekend to follow the steps of the number one golfer of the world.

Congratulations to Henrik Stenson for his win at the Tour Championship AND Fedex Cup for a combined $11.44 million dollars.

He put on a ball-striking clinic the entire weekend until today where it seemed he felt the pressure a bit, but still made some clutch putts to get the trophy and big check.

Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth
But how about 20-year old Jordan Spieth?

Spieth, who didn’t make it through the second stage of Q School last year and had no playing status on the PGA Tour at the start of this season, capped a staggering rookie season by finishing in a tie for second in the FedExCup finale.

He is a player to watch from now on, as he is the “real deal”.

Another golfer I really liked was Billy Horschel. What a fantastic golfer and beautiful golf swing.

It’s exciting to think we have some young players coming up that will represent the US very well for the next decade.

Congrats to Phil Mickelson and his family for the victory at the British Open.

He’s a class act, and with what his wife Amy has gone through these past few years, it’s great to see!

Golf is a cerebral game that involves strategy, concentration, and an immense amount of mental stamina. However, it may not be as fast-paced as 300 pound men running into each other at full speed. As a result, Golf doesn’t always get the coverage it deserves from television providers. Luckily, golf fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief as technology expands the way people watch TV and providers offer more ways to watch golf on TV.

Online vs. Normal Cable

Online coverage has surpassed the cable medium in terms of golf coverage. Not only has online providers been offering more channels to viewers, but also an increased level of engagement. DirecTV, for instance, offers golf lovers the following extras:

Top Five Leaders – this displays the top five current golfers in relation to par.
Leader Board – Gives a list of all golfers on the field with hole-by-hole stats. Also displays driving distance and putting average. Fans can even track their favorite players.
Course Tour – Gives fans a bird’s eye view and fly-over video for each hole. Also gives descriptions of any of the Tournament’s current holes.
Masters Quiz – Golf fans can test their knowledge with a 10 question quiz that’s refreshed daily. The quiz is on the given tournament.

Get Tournament Coverage

DirecTV has really led the way in increasing the amount of television coverage given to the Masters, the Bridgestone Invitational, the Memorial Tournament, U.S. Open, The Open Championship, PGA championship, and the Barclays. For instance, DirecTV’s Masters Mosaic Channel gave gold fans 6 different ways to watch the Masters Tournament. You can sign up for DirecTV through and save money on first time subscriptions and channel packages.

The coverage will be similar for the U.S. Open taking place June 13-16. DirecTV will allow viewers to watch broadcasts from ESPN, two Featured Groups, and dedicated coverage on the 11th and 18th holes which have historically been the most difficult for golfers. These channels are available in consecutive change (Ch. 701-704) which means that golf lovers won’t even have to switch back and forth from channels.

When people turn on their TV they are no longer just watching a program. They are fully engaged on a higher level than ever before in history. Golf fans can now track their favorite players, take quizzes, and become fully immersed in the golfing experience.

Adam Scott 2013 Masters Champion

I’m very happy to see Adam Scott finally win his first major, and the biggest one of all the Masters.

I have a friend in Australia I just emailed, and he is quite excited, as I’m sure most of Australia is.

If Tiger could putt, he might be wearing another green jacket.

Either way, The 2013 Masters was a very exciting tournament to watch!
